Change the arrangement without a gap

Check the state’s change procedure, consent and effective date before ending a service. Separate the government filing from a provider’s cancellation terms.

This is not a government website. Incorporation Bureau is privately owned and is not affiliated with any state business registry, any Secretary of State, or the IRS. You can file directly with the official registry yourself.

To change a registered agent or registered-office arrangement, follow the applicable state's filing and consent requirements, confirm when the change takes effect and handle any provider cancellation separately. Buying a new subscription does not itself update the government record. An appointment also does not settle every other good-standing requirement.

Identify what you are changing

Check the current entity record and determine whether you are changing an agent, registered-office address, statutory-agent forwarding address or more than one item. State systems differ. New York's Secretary of State has a statutory-agent role; Pennsylvania distinguishes a registered office or contracted CROP from a registered agent.

Use the state registry links for the actual procedure. Do not use a generic agent-change form for a field governed by a different process.

Confirm eligibility and consent

Before submitting a change, confirm that the proposed person or provider can meet the applicable address, availability and consent rules. Agree on document receipt, forwarding and account contacts. An address package that receives ordinary mail may not be an eligible agent or registered-office service.

Our agent decision guide separates the legal requirement from optional paid assistance, and the address guide explains different address uses.

File the change and verify its effect

Check the current form, filing method, fee and effective-date rules. Keep the submission and acceptance records and inspect the state record after processing. Fees differ by jurisdiction and filing; a provider's advertised switching offer does not establish that the government filing is free.

Plan for legal documents that arrive during the transition. Avoid ending an arrangement you still need before the replacement is effective, and make sure the people responsible for responding can access delivered documents.

Cancel the old service under its actual terms

Review renewal dates, cancellation procedure, refunds and how documents arriving after termination will be handled. Confirm whether the provider requires evidence of the state change. These contract terms are distinct from the state's filing procedure.

For multiple entities or states, track each appointment and filing separately. Do not mark every registration changed after updating just one company or jurisdiction. Compare service scope and renewal terms and keep the broader reporting calendar current.
